With only 24 days left on his visa, Omar Dibba kept checking his email.
One message could decide everything. An approval meant he could stay and build his future in Germany. A delay could mean packing his life into a suitcase and starting over again.
“I didn’t come to Germany blindly,” he says. “I had a plan.”
A calculated move
Omar, originally from The Gambia, was not starting from zero. Before coming to Germany, he had already built a career working across different countries, including Turkey and Canada. His background was in logistics and supply chain operations, transport planning, shipment coordination, and managing the complex movement of goods across borders.
These were roles that required responsibility, precision, and quick decision-making.
Germany seemed like the logical next step. With its strong industrial base and demand for logistics professionals, it looked like a place where his experience would be valued. Through the Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card), he saw a pathway to enter the country and search for work directly.
“I believed being here would give me better opportunities than applying from abroad,” he explains.
Hope meets reality
After arriving, Omar approached his job search seriously. He updated his CV, tailored applications, and began applying for logistics roles across different German cities.
At first, he was optimistic.
Then the rejections started.
Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. Many applications received no response at all. Others ended with polite rejection emails.
Despite his experience, he discovered a difficult reality many international professionals face: qualifications alone are not always enough.
At the same time, life in Germany was not waiting for success to arrive.
Rent had to be paid. Health insurance was mandatory. Food and transport costs continued every month. Without a stable income, pressure slowly built.
To survive, Omar took several part-time jobs over 11 months to survive.
“I just needed something to sustain myself while I kept searching,” he says.
These jobs helped him stay afloat financially, but they were far from the career he had built. Balancing survival jobs while continuing applications made every week exhausting.
The hidden challenge
Language also became a barrier.
While Omar could manage everyday conversations, professional German, especially in interviews, was much harder. Many employers expected fluency.
This added another layer of difficulty to an already stressful process.
Still, he kept going.
A discouraging breakthrough
After months of searching, he finally received a full-time job offer. For a moment, it felt like everything was about to change.
But there was a problem.
The position was classified as non-skilled work, meaning it did not qualify him for the type of residence permit he needed.
“That was very discouraging,” he recalls. “It felt like I was starting again.”
For many people, this might have been the breaking point. But Omar decided to change his strategy rather than give up.
Changing the strategy
Instead of sending large numbers of applications through job portals, he became more focused. He began researching companies directly, applying through official career pages, and targeting roles that truly matched his background.
This more deliberate approach soon paid off.
During his search, he discovered Planet A Foods GmbH in Munich. From the beginning, the process felt different. Communication was clear. The recruitment steps were structured and transparent.
As part of the selection process, he was given a case study.
“That was my opportunity,” he says. “I could finally show what I can actually do.”
The assignment allowed him to demonstrate his practical logistics knowledge –how he analyzes problems, plans operations, and makes decisions under real conditions.
He completed the process.
Then came the offer.
The race against time
His role as a Transport and Logistics Planner finally matched his qualifications and met the requirements for a skilled work permit.
But timing was now his biggest enemy.
By the time he received the offer, his Chancenkarte visa had only 24 days remaining.
“It felt like I was running out of time,” he says. “Everything depended on those final days.”
Every step of the approval process suddenly felt critical. Any administrative delay could have forced him to leave Germany even after securing the right job.
It became a race between bureaucracy and the clock.
The moment everything changed
Then, just before his deadline, the approval finally came.
“It was a relief,” he says.
After nearly a year of uncertainty, survival jobs, rejections, and pressure, he could finally focus on the career he had worked so hard to build.
Today, Omar works in Munich in his professional field, applying his logistics expertise and continuing to grow within Germany’s labour market.
Lessons from the journey
Looking back, he describes the experience as difficult but transformative. A journey that tested his persistence, adaptability, and patience.
His advice to others considering the Chancenkarte is simple and practical:
“Apply directly to companies, not just through job portals. Take time to really understand the roles and tailor your applications.”
He also stresses something many underestimate:
“Keep improving your German. It makes a big difference.”
And most importantly:
“Even when progress feels slow, don’t stop. Things can change at any time.”
More than just one story
Omar Dibba’s experience reflects the reality many Chancenkarte holders face: uncertainty, financial pressure, setbacks, and doubt.
But it also shows something equally real: persistence, strategy, and adaptability can eventually open the right door.
Today, he continues to build his life in Germany, not just as a worker, but as someone who refused to give up when time was nearly gone.
And with only 24 days left, that decision made all the difference.
